Spore Tribal Stage Video Preview
Discover the division of labor as we delve into the real-time strategy mechanics of Spore's middle stage.

August 25, 2008 - After having cruised through Cell Stage and Creature Stage, it's time to take a look at the third and middle stage of Spore. We're talking about Tribal Stage, when you go from controlling a single creature in Spore to controlling a primitive society where you can divide labor between over a dozen creatures. We had a chance to go to Maxis to play Spore and record brand new footage of what the game is like, so you have an idea of what to expect when it ships next month.

Tribal Stage is a rudimentary real-time strategy game; it's like Age of Empires or StarCraft but on a much smaller and more manageable scale. At the heart of Tribal Stage is your tribe, and you find yourself on a continent surrounded by tribes of rival creatures. To advance, you must neutralize your opponents, either by allying with them or by wiping them off the map.





The basic resource in Tribal Stage is food, which can be collected by having your tribe members harvest fruit from trees or hunt nearby animals for meat or if you go fishing, provided you have the technology. Food lets you recruit new tribe members; let's say one of your guys gets killed by a wild animal. It also lets you construct new buildings, and these buildings can help outfit your tribal members with different types of weapons or musical instruments. Finally, food can be used as a gift to help buy friends.

If you're warlike and aggressive, you'll want to crush opposing tribes. All you have to do is arm your tribe members with weapons such as spears and stone axes and go caveman on the opposition. If you're a nicer player, you can serenade them with music so that they ally with you. So you equip your tribesmen with musical instruments such as maracas and horns and impress your neighbors. Whenever you eliminate or ally with a tribe it adds to your village totem. As your totem gets taller, your tribe gets more sophisticated and can support a larger population. Once you deal with all the opposing tribes, you're ready to move on to Civilization Stage.
